Taxi drivers Attention! Abolition of BPM as of 2020
12 juni 2019
It has been known for a while: From 2020, Dutch taxi operators will no longer be able to reclaim the BPM of a new vehicle. What should you do as a taxi driver or what exactly is it? Read the changes and tips in our blog.
What is changing?
The above message became known after the House of Representatives adopted the new law amendment. What will change for taxi entrepreneurs from January 1, 2020:
- Taxi drivers no longer receive a BPM exemption on new or used vans (remaining BPM);
- Taxi drivers do receive a BPM exemption on electric vehicles.
What does the government say?
The government website states the following:
Abolition of refund of BPM taxi transport. The cabinet wants to go green. That is why the BPM exemption for taxi transport is being abolished. This applies to street taxis, contract transport and target group transport (care and student transport) or a combination of these. This gives the taxi industry an incentive to purchase less polluting taxis and vans. Because the lower the CO2 emissions, the lower the BPM. Zero-emission cars are exempt from BPM.
What now?
There are a number of tips you can use.
- Taxi transport will be replaced in 2019. This means you are still entitled to a BPM exemption;
- Switch to electric taxi transport;
- Switching to hybrid taxi transport, still paying BPM, but less.
What are possible consequences?
- The costs of taxi rides are increasing. The competitive environment is changing considerably. This also means for subsidized transport, which in turn is borne by the government;
- Illegal and Uber rides are increasing;
- Smaller taxi companies are struggling due to rising costs;
It is not an ideal solution, but reality is getting closer. We at 123Lease would like to advise on these upcoming changes in the law.
