Electric driving as an entrepreneur: the benefits
25 november 2024
Electric driving is becoming more and more common these days. You see more and more EVs on the road and maybe you are also thinking about making the switch to an electric car. In addition, you can also benefit from various advantages, especially if you are going to drive an electric car for business. The various advantages of an electric car for the entrepreneur, we at 123Lease list for you below.
1. No bpm
If you register a car in the Netherlands, you must pay bpm. This is a type of tax that you pay once. There are a number of exceptions where you do not have to pay bpm. For example, you do not have to pay bpm for an electric car. The amount of bpm is determined on the basis of the CO2 emissions. And you guessed it: electric cars do not emit CO2 and you are rewarded for this by not having to pay bpm.
Speaking of bpm: a lot is going to change in the coming year. As of 1 January 2025, the bpm exemption for vans will be abolished. Previously, entrepreneurs with a van did not have to pay bpm, but that will change at the end of 2024. From that moment on, the bpm will be determined based on CO2 emissions. The more CO2 the car emits, the higher the bpm will be. You guessed it: this is not the case for electric cars and you therefore do not pay bpm for them either. That is a nice bonus.
2. Access to any area
If you are on the road a lot as an entrepreneur, there is a good chance that you will also be found in Dutch cities. Especially for work, it is nice that you can simply continue driving without any problems and reach your destination. This is no longer self-evident these days: diesel cars are already refused in some cities. As an entrepreneur, it is therefore no longer advisable to opt for a diesel car, but for an environmentally friendly car that is simply permitted.
There are already several environmental zones in the Netherlands: to be precise, in four cities. The environmental zones cannot admit vehicles if they are too polluting. Think, for example, of cars, trucks or vans that run on diesel. Cities where passenger cars and vans on diesel are no longer welcome are Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Arnhem. In these cities (except Arnhem), buses that run on diesel are also not allowed. There are also a number of different Dutch cities where trucks that run on petrol are not allowed. To be sure that you are allowed to go everywhere, electric driving is a tip. You do not emit any harmful substances and you are welcome in every city.
3. Reduced additional tax
If you want to lease an electric car for business purposes at 123Lease , you will also have to deal with various costs. For example, think of the monthly costs that you have to pay for the lease contract. It is also important to take into account the additional payment. You pay additional payment if you drive more than 500 private kilometers with your business car.
The amount of the additional tax differs per car. At the time of writing, the additional tax percentage for an electric car is still somewhat lower than the percentage for a fuel car. For fuel cars and plug-in hybrids, you have to deal with an additional tax percentage of 22 percent. This is the standard additional tax percentage. For an electric car, this percentage is somewhat lower: in 2024, you will pay 16 percent for the first 30,000 euros of the purchase price. If you exceed that 30,000 euros, you will pay the regular additional tax percentage of 22 percent. In 2025, the additional tax percentage for electric cars will be increased to 17 percent. A different additional tax percentage applies to youngtimers. Read in our blog more about the additional payment .
4. With financial leasing: tax benefits
Are you going to lease an electric car from 123Lease on the basis of financial lease ? Then you can also benefit from various advantages and to be precise we are talking about the fiscal advantages. The experts at 123Lease can provide you with more advice and will also explain the advantages to you in detail. However, we will briefly list the advantages for you below.
- VAT refund: If you lease a car on the basis of financial lease, you have the option to reclaim the VAT by means of a tax return.
- Depreciation: A car always has to deal with depreciation. The annual depreciation can be deducted from the profit, which ultimately means you have to pay less tax.
- Interest deduction: You may also deduct the interest charged on a financial lease contract from your profit.
- Investment deduction: In addition, as an entrepreneur you also have to deal with the investment deduction, which you can also deduct from the profit. Think for example of the MIA and Vamil scheme. This scheme is specifically intended for environmentally friendly considerations such as an electric company car.
5. Better image
In addition to the financial benefits, an electric car also has a number of benefits when it comes to sustainability. For example, an electric car does not emit CO2 and that means that you can enter any Dutch city. In addition, it also provides an advantage when it comes to your company. An electric car from 123Lease can also create a better, sustainable image among your audience. Moreover, at 123Lease we only offer representative cars. Point of attention: road tax
It is also good to know about road tax for an electric car. This is a point of attention. For example, you do not have to pay road tax in 2024, but in 2025 this will change. In 2025 you will have to pay road tax for your electric car, but you will still receive a discount of 75 percent. In 2026 you will pay the full amount for road tax for your electric car. However, the amount of road tax is calculated based on the weight of the car. And electric cars can be extremely heavy, which also means that you will have to pay a lot of road tax. How much this will be, varies per car. At 123Lease we can explain this to you in more detail.
